Cayman Swimming Is Coming....Ya Man!
Cayman swimmers produced some outstanding swims during the first evening of the Walter Rodgers Meet in Jamaica.
Kavanagh Lambert opened the proceedings with a fine silver medal winning performance in the 11/12yrs 200m IM (2:47.03) with Stefanie Boothe placing 4th (2:58.27), Ella Plunkett 5th (2:59.78) and Sarah Jackson 7th (3:01.89); Kavanagh, Stefanie and Ella all being inside the CARIFTA Qualifying Time.
Matthew Somerville responded to the challenge in the Boys 11/12yrs 200m IM, taking silver in 2:51.80, also a CARIFTA Qualifying Time.
In the 13/14yrs age grouping Lauren Hew demonstrated her versatilty with a silver medal winning swim of 2:42.75 (a New CARIFTA Time); Isabella Tognazzo placing 6th ( 3:04.33). Cole Morgan, better know for his backstroke prowess, produced a bronze medal winning swim of 2:32.57 to secure new CARIFTA Time.
Daniell Boothe and Coral Tomascik concluded the girls 15/17yrs medley events with gold and silver respectively (2:28.16 & 2:39.04) whilst Iain McCallum (2:36.82) and Andrew Smilley (2:40.60) secured Top 8 finishes in the 15/17yrs boys.
Stefanie Boothe powered er way to silver in the 11/12yrs 50m butterfly (32.40) with Kavanagh Lambert placing 4th (33.71); both setting CARIFTA Qualifing Times. Sam Burnstein and Matthew Somerville also set new CARIFTA times; Sam 4th in 35.05 and Matthew 5th in 35.61.
Cole Morgan swam to a surprise 6th place in the 13/14yrs boys 50m butterfly (31.69) with Kyle Fraser placing 6th in the 15/17yrs category in 29.27; Flynn Hope taking a Top 8 placing with a 34.54 in the 13/4yrs girls 50m butterfly.. However, it was left to Danielle Boothe to provide the finishing touches with a powerful gold medal winning display in the 15/17yrs girls 50m butterfly of 30.32.
Ashley Theaker swam "out of her skin" to win the girls 13/14yrs 800m freestyle in a new CARIFTA Time of 10:19.51: Lauren Hew picking up a superb bronze medal in 10:41.91. Behthany Cleaver took bronze in the 15/17yrs age group with a 10:57.99.
Andrew Smilley, Special Olympian, swam a well paced race to take the 15yrs & over 1500m freestyle in 19:20.77 whilst Ed Weber took silver in the 11/12yrs 1500m free with 22:40.98
A very nice opener to the meet....
