Butlers Bombard Bermuda
On a night which confirmed Cayman Swimming as an emerging powerhouse, Geoffrey and Lara Butler headlined the show.
Swimming in the 400m freestyle, Geoffrey stalked his prey over 15 laps of the 16 lap race, coming from a body length behind to snatch gold in a new CIASA Record Time of 3:56.91....his first time under 4 minutes and a huge 10 second lifetime best.
Not to be outdone, Lara, already the holder of 5 medals, executed the perfect race to win the 200m butterfly in a new CIASA Record of 2:16.45; her first time under 2:20. She went on to take silver in the 50m backstroke in a time of 29.91 which equals the CIASA Record.
Geoff's 400m freestyle and Lara's 200m butterfly were true examples of Performance by Design.....they had practised for that very moment..
Brett and Shaune Fraser took to the blocks of the 50m freestyle and blasted their way to the podium, Brett taking Gold in a new CIASA Record of 21.73 and Shaune bronze in 22.37.
Alex McCallum once again stepped up his game in the final of the 100m backstroke to take 5th in 59.88..remember, his best coming into the meet was a 1:03!!!
We were all awating the mens freestyle relay...would the elusive GOLD be theirs?!
The answer was a resounding YES...the team lifted the title in 3:20.65 (Alex McCallum 53.27, Brett Fraser 47.13, Geoff Butler 52.99, Shaune Fraser 47.26). Great Swimming! A first time ever Cayman relay gold for Brett and Shaune ...and a first ever relay medal for the Cayman's men team at the Island Games.
Great Swimming all round..
Be Proud!
