Onwards in 2018! Aquatics at full speed

An outstanding 17th FINA World Championships 2017, in Budapest, Hungary which played out 16 days to full venues and a huge global TV audience, was the highlight of a busy year for aquatic sports.
But as one fresh new year kicks-off, another packed programme is on the horizon for the FINA Family in 2018.

Within its Development, FINA will implement an initiative called the “FINA Aquatics Olympic Support”, aimed at distributing additional support funds to the National Federations taking part in the FINA World Championships, FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) or FINA World Junior Championships to help them with various development and projects (see more details here). This support will also be extended to FINA’s Continental Associations.

Moreover, an e-learning platform, an online educational tool, will be launched soon, for coaches, officials and athletes.

FINA also looks forward to a busy end of the year, with the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), the 5th FINA World Aquatics Convention and the FINA World Aquatics Gala, all of which to be held in Hangzhou (CHN) in December 2018.

In the meantime, the FINA Diving World Series will be held between March and May 2018. The FINA Diving World Cup, held on even years, will be organised in Wu Han (CHN) in June.

FINA will offer a unique circuit for the open water elite with the FINA Marathon Swim World Series 2018, kicking-off in March and running through November.

An innovative FINA Swimming World Cup will also be held this year (more details to come), Artistic Swimming and High Diving also will have their respective top competitions, the FINA Artistic Swimming World Series (composed of 10 meets) and the FINA High Diving World Cup. And finally various Junior and Youth World Championships across many disciplines will also be organised in 2018.

Name changes for both Open Water 2018 Series

In the spotlight

Excitement is palpable as the Open Water season is also about to begin and this year is going to be highlighted by positive changes.

Santa Fe in Argentina will be hosting the first race of the year as part of the 2018 circuit of the FINA UltraMarathon Swim Series, previously called the FINA Open Water Grand Prix. Lac St Jean in Canada is the other venue confirmed for this traditional Series which was first contested as an autonomous circuit in 2007. The full 2018 calendar will be available soon on FINA website.

In parallel, the prestigious circuit of the formerly called FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup will debut in March with a brand-new name: The FINA Marathon Swim World Series 2018.

This year’s Series will integrate mass participation races, open to all age categories, organised in parallel of the 10km elite race, the same day at the same place, to hopefully increase the media interest further. Despite adding value to the host cities and for the sponsors, the focus on the Mass Participation is about providing a warm and inviting challenge.

Confirmed host cities for this upcoming edition are*:

Seychelles (SEY) – May 20
Setubal (POR) – June 9
Balatonfured (HUN) – June 16
Chun-An (CHN) – September 16
Taiwan (TPE) – September 22
Abu Dhabi (UAE) – November 24

*an additional three hosts are pending confirmation

After seven races, Simone Ruffini was the overall winner of the 2017 FINA/HOSA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup with 85 points. Behind him, were Allan Do Carmo (BRA) and Federico Vanelli (ITA), with 78 points each.

In the women's competition, Arianna Bridi of Italy clinched the overall title. Anna Marcela Cunha of Brazil secured the second position in the overall ranking with 102 points and Rachele Bruni (ITA) was third with 98 points.

The conference programme unfolds over three days and will review some key aspects of the working methodologies for both coaches and judges in diving.
