YMCA HOSTS 3RD ANNUAL LEADERS FOR YOUTH CONFERENCE

We had a wonderful time at the 3rd annual Leaders for Youth Conference . 130 YMCA leaders, volunteers and parents gathered together over two days from 12-13 January to learn from each other and grow as leaders working with our youth.

The conference theme this year was "The Power of Perspective",  focusing on how leaders can benefit from approaching challenges facing our youth from various perspectives, especially from the eyes of the youth themselves.

W

orkshops featured expert local presenters, as well as international YMCA partner trainers. For the first time, the Y conference also welcomed YMCA staff participants from across the Caribbean, namely Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Education,  Chief Officer Christen Suckoo expressed his thoughts on this year's theme, "The power of perspective is a timely one. We live in an age when understanding, accepting and respecting each other's perspective is giving way to pride and a stubborn stopping up of the ears.  This is no less true in Cayman than it is elsewhere, and no less important to understand, than within the context of reaching, and positively influencing our children and youth.  We can't help them if we can't build a bridge of respect.  We can't build bridges if we don't listen, and we can't hear them if we don't understand and respect their perspectives."

Mr. Suckoo congratulated the Y on its continual focus on training leaders and the pursuit of excellence in serving our youth.

All the staff and volunteers are looking forward to putting the valuable information learned into practice as the Y continues to serve the Cayman community.

GOVERNMENT RENEWS CONTRACT WITH Y FOR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMME

The Y and the Ministry of Education have recently renewed the contract to continue YMCA management of the Extended After School Programme (EASP), serving up to 1600 government school students at 9 sites, reaching 15 schools, including Cayman Brac. The partnership began with the Y first overseeing the programme in September 2015.

Through this programme, the YMCA has reached children most in need during the critical after-school hours and provides parents with a safe after-school environment for their children. The YMCA has worked to improve participants' social, emotional and academic competencies and provide activities with a focus on character development and core values .

"After-school programming was highlighted as a key need when the Y came to Cayman five years ago and truly reflects the mission of the Y in every way," stated Y Operations Director, Gillian Roffey. "The primary purpose of the YMCA is Youth Development and through the EASP we aim to maximise the potential of every child.  We are so pleased to have been given the opportunity to continue to impact Cayman's youth, teaching them life skills and contributing towards the development of influential leaders for our future."

THE Y DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD

If there was ever a doubt that the Y is making a difference in the lives of Cayman's children, one only has to meet Deja Brownrigg  (right in photo).

Nine-year old Deja started coming to the Y Day Camps three years ago, and also joined the extended afterschool programme at the Red Bay Primary site.  Her grandmother, Ms. Sue, remembers how difficult it was to get her timid granddaughter to the Y camp.

" There were many a morning when Winnie and Flash (Y camp leaders) would have to persuade her to get out of the car, but that is no longer a problem ," said Ms. Sue. "Deja is always happy to attend and participate in all the activities. She has made friends and is always talking about the Y . She comes home happy and tired and talking about the fun times she has had. She loves the songs and looks forward to learning new ones. She tells her friends and their parents what a fantastic time she has and that their children should go too.

Ms. Sue says the extended afterschool programme has also been a great experience for Deja because she gets to interact with children from different schools and make new friends. Sue also likes the fact that the Y EASP allows kids to explore through play but also helps them with their homework.

" The Y has brought out the best in Deja . She has become a confident child and is willing to take part in assemblies in afterschool and will get up in front of everyone to sing in afterschool and at camp."

So proud of you Deja!

Deja's proud Grandmother Sue Brownrigg who has also become a Y volunteer!

PWC  is in the "Volunteer Spotlight" this month for their continued commitment to the Y.

Recently, new PWC staff members visited the George Town Primary After-School students to lead a FUN-filled afternoon of crafts, international trivia games & sports.

PWC continues to support the after-school programme and it's always a special treat for the kids! Thank you PWC for your ongoing commitment to the community and support of the Y!
