| 2018 YMCA WORLD CHALLENGE |
| The YMCA World Challenge is a highlight of the year for many YMCAs. This year the challenge is: together can we run the distance to every YMCA in the world? It's a combined journey of more than 120,000 km or 75,000 miles! What does our Cayman Y have to do? We're going to create a run/walk event and see how many runners we can get and how far they can go on Saturday, 2 June .
The YMCA World Challenge is the YMCAs annual event to mobilise the Movement to share their great impact with local communities. Our goal is to connect the YMCA, raise awareness, speak of our mission, invite others to join us and celebrate the Y's 174th birthday. Watch this space for more information about how the Cayman Y is going to participate in the YMCA World Challenge. |
| THE BIGGER Y PICTURE Living in Cayman and being part of a small community, it's easy to forget all the resources the YMCA has and how Cayman is connected to this worldwide phenomenal organisation. Even though Cayman's Y began its journey in 2012, just over five years ago, we are part of one of the oldest and largest movements for youth in the world! The YMCA was founded in 1844 and it now operates in 119 countries, reaching 58 million people around the world! Globally, the YMCA works to bring social justice and peace to young people and their communities, regardless of religion, race, gender or culture. The World Alliance of YMCAs is based in Geneva, Switzerland and is a confederation of National Councils of YMCAs around the world. Cayman's Y is a member of the Latin American & Caribbean Alliance (LACA) that consists of 28 countries. As part of LACA, Cayman's Y is able to work with the other countries in our region to exchange ideas and best practices. There are great opportunities for internships and knowledge sharing to ensure all the region's Y's are growing and serving their communities in the best possible way. |

| WORKING WITH THE Y! 21-year old Samuel 'Bugs' Reid is one person who answered the call to serve. Bugs joined the Y in Summer 2016 as a Camp Leader, and is now based at the Red Bay Primary School Extended Afterschool Programme. He says what he loves most about working at the Y is the opportunity to impact the lives of kids while seeing his own character development. He's very energetic and feels that's something he brings to the Y. The Y is always looking for a few good men and women to join the ranks and help us serve our community. If you or someone you know is interested in being a part of the Y team , click here for more information. |
| MEET EMMA-JANE! Since the inception of the YMCA EASP at Sir John A Cumber Primary, Mrs. Emma-Jane Fisher has been volunteering as a swim instructor for our students. The students are always enthused about Ms. Emma Jane's classes and never want to miss a session. Other groups are asking, anticipating and anxiously awaiting their turn at swimming with Ms. Emma. The staff at the Sir John A Cumber EASP says Ms. Emma is always prepared and excited to work with the students. In the children's own words, "Ms. Emma is the BEST!" Thank you Ms Emma for teaching our students such an important skill! |
