Geoffrey and Lara Butler hit the medal trail from the off during the first finals session at the Island Games in Bermuda. Geoffrey, with his metronomic rhythm and power, paced his way to silver in the 1500m freestyle with a 20 second lifetime best and a new CIASA record of 15:46.87. Lara then took over the reins to crush the opposition in the 400m IM with a gold medal winning performance of 4:56.29 and yet another CIASA record. Friend of Cayman Swimming, Caitlin McClatchey (aka The Fairy Princess!), raced to bronze in the 200m freestye at the World University Games being held in Kazan, Russia. Out in 57.96 over the first 100m, Caitlin maintained form and determination to secure bronze in 1:58.20. A 3 time Olympian, 5 Time World Medallist and Double Commonwealth Champion, who is now studying for a Postgraduate degree in Performance Psychology at Edinburgh University, was kept out of the World Championships through injury. Well done Caitlin.. another example of overcoming adversity.
A bronze medal winning performance from the Cayman Men's 4 x 50m Medley Team topped a great evening for the team. Alex McCallum, who earlier in the evening had raced to another lifetime best and 8th place in the 50m backstroke, led off the team with a 28.44, Shaune Fraser putting in a superb 28.13 50m breaststroke, followed by Brett Fraser's 22.65 50m fly and Geoffrey Butler (that well know sprinter) bringing it home in 25.40. The performance topped a day which saw the small Cayman Team take 4 medals...
CARIFTA finalist, Ella Plunkett, is currently training with the club team at the National Aquatics Centre in Dublin before competing in the Irish National Age Group Championships which are being held from the 18th - 21st July. Ella has made tremendous progress this year and is looking to gain valuable experience by lining up against, and taking on, Ireland's fastest young swimmers. The newly opened National Aquatics Centre in Bermuda is the venue for the Island Games. It's looking FASTTTT and Cayman swimmers are ready to make the water BOIL! The Island Games in Bermuda is official open! The teams paraded in front an enthisuastic crowd at the Opening Ceremony which was held in the National Stadium and Coral Tomascik was selected by the CIGA to pour Cayman Water into the symbolic Island Games Fountain. The Cayman Swim Team are in fine spirits and Head Coach Andy Copley is looking forward to the racing which start tomorrow. One more sleep and it's SHOWTIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Cayman Island Games Team went straight to the pool for a dip on their first monring in Bermuda. After a restful evening and a leisurely breakfast, the team went out to test the magic waters of the newly constructed National Aquatics Centre. Wells Johnstone, a 13yr old swimmer from Tennessee, has been training in with us for 10 days. Eager to maintain her fitness during the family vacation, Wells attended sessions at CBAC and Stingray....she usually trains 9 sessions per week, averaging around 7km per session. Wells returns home today and competes in the Regional Championships which are being held in Nashville, Tennessee from Thursday. Good Luck Wells.. It's been great having you visit
Here is a picture of a rather old pool constructed in the sea off St.Malo in France. (click on picture to enlarge) Many Summer Camps in the USA and Canda have pool constructed in a section of lake too. With Cayman's lovely clear, warm, calm waters is such a construction possible? A series of bulkheads...set of lane lines...? Just a thought.
