In less than 20mins Cayman swimmers took 2 gold medals and set 3 CIASA records. Olympians, Shaune and Brett Fraser, destroyed the field in the 100m butterfly, Shaune powering his way to victory in a new Island Games and CIASA record of 51.06; his 50m split time of 23.39 also being a new CIASA record. After striking gold in the 100m backstroke earlier tonight, Lara Butler continues her impressive form to secure her second medal of this evening; a bronze in the 200IM in a lifetime best of 2:20.15 and breaking yet another CIASA record! Congratulations Lara!
The Men's 4 x 50m Freestyle relay topped a GREAT night of swimming with a silver medal winning performance. The dynamic quartet of Alex McCallum (24.68), Geoffrey Butler (24.79), Brett Fraser (21.17) and Shaune Fraser (21.38) powered their way to 2nd spot in an outstanding 1:32.01. On the second day of swimming Cayman set another 8 CIASA records and took 5 medals WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!! Cayman Fast Swimming.... We Love It!!!
Cayman Swimming visitor, Caitlin McClatchey, added a second bronze to her collection at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Swimming in the 400m freestyle she placed 3rd in 4:08.77; going 2:03.45 for the first 200m and 2:05.32 for the second 200m.....nice swimming despite missing training through injury. Cayman Swimmers progressed comfortably from prelims to finals on Day 2 of the Island Games in Bermuda. Brett and Shaune Fraser qualified as 2nd & 3rd fastest respectively for the 100m butterfly final; Brett going 54.49 and Shaune 55.23. Lara Butler, fresh from yesterday's medal winning and record breaking exploits, went 1:06.71 in the 100m backstroke (PB) to qualify for the final in 7th spot; she then went on to make the finals of the 200m IM in 5th place wiith a 2:25.84. Take Note.... Something is going on in Cayman Swimming.... The signs were there in December...... and confirmed at CARIFTA.... St.Pete was a blast... and now Island Games!!! After 2 days....9 medals 15 CIASA Records!!! it's all about BELIEF....BE PROUD.....and do not have low expectations....or accept mediocrity.. We Love FAST SWIMMING....and can achieve it! whooshhhh!!!!
Friend of Cayman Swimming, Caitlin McClatchey (aka The Fairy Princess!), raced to bronze in the 200m freestye at the World University Games being held in Kazan, Russia. Out in 57.96 over the first 100m, Caitlin maintained form and determination to secure bronze in 1:58.20. A 3 time Olympian, 5 Time World Medallist and Double Commonwealth Champion, who is now studying for a Postgraduate degree in Performance Psychology at Edinburgh University, was kept out of the World Championships through injury. Well done Caitlin.. another example of overcoming adversity.
CARIFTA Gold Medallist, Lauren Hew, travels to Canada this week to put in the final preparations before competing in the Canadian National Age Group Championships. Lauren will be training with Guelph Aquatics Swim Team, Ontario, prior to heading to Montreal for the meet. http://www.guelphmarlins.ca/TabGeneric.jsp?_tabid_=47967&team=cagmac The Canadian Age Groups features Canada's top young swimmers and will be held from 24th-28th July. Cayman Swimmers continued to fire up the pool during the morning heats at the Island Games in Bermuda. Inspired by Lara Butler's opening swims, Alex McCallum raced to a 1 second PB of 28.40 to sneak a place int\ tonight's final: Alex will be in lane 8. Geoffrey and Lara Butler hit the medal trail from the off during the first finals session at the Island Games in Bermuda. Geoffrey, with his metronomic rhythm and power, paced his way to silver in the 1500m freestyle with a 20 second lifetime best and a new CIASA record of 15:46.87.
