CARIFTA Champion, Lauren Hew, smashed the CIASA and Natonal 13/14yrs Backstroke Records at the Caledonian Meet being held at the Lions Pool. Utilising her excellent underwater skills, Lauren blasted her way to a 32.11 in the 50m backstroke whilst in the 100m backstroke event she added her superior stroke rate and technique to take the title in 1:08.43. The 100m backstroke time was even more pleasing as it completed the trio of backstroke qualifying times she needed to compete at the Canadian Age Group Championships in Montreal. Nice Job Lauren!...

Zororo Mutomba shot to the top of the rankings of the CIASA Shooting Stars Award Scheme with her 30.11 50m freestyle at the Caledonian Swim Meet; her time giving her a 4 Star Rating in the Girls Born 2002 category. Alison Jackson secured a 3 Star Rating at the same meet after going 30.96 for 50m freestyle in the same category. Alison Jackson, pictured here with record breaking sister Sarah, was once again on form during session 3 of the Caledonian Meet at the Lions Pool. A powerful 50m backstroke saw her set new 9/10yrs CIASA and National figures of 36.86 whilst a well paced 100m freestyle saw the same record breaking prowess with an impressive 1:10.18. The meet has seen outstanding PB's from many swimmers and this trend looks to continue during the final day of swimming. Great Job!
Stephanie Royston and swim sisters Alison and Sarah Jackson raced to new Records during the second session of the Caledonian Meet being held at the Lions Pool. Stephanie, smashed her own 8rys & Under CIASA 100m butterfly record with a fine 1:51.04 (the day before her 9th birthday!), Alison sprinted to a new CIASA and National record of 30.96 in the 9/10yrs 50m freestyle, whilst Sarah powered her way to a new 11/12yrs National Record of 29.35 over the same distance. Well Done Ladies! Fast Swimming... We Love It!
Ashley Theaker opened the Caledonian Swim Meet in style. Swimming in the 800m freestyle, Ashley set a blistering early pace which gave her a significant lead and the clear water in which to settle into her rhythmical pace. She took the title in 9:49.49, a substantial PB and her first time under 10 minutes;Danielle Boothe placed 2nd in 10:02.30 and Samantha Bailey 3rd in 10:22.39. At the recent Russian Championships a starting block add-on which creates a ledge for backstroke starts was tested out. Manufacturers plan to have a similar piece of apparatus available for testing at the World Championships this summer. Part of the proposed rule changes up for consideration at this summer's FINA Congress are changes to the backstroke rules which may allow such temporary ledges to be used.
Two Dutch swimmers made this short video as part of their commitment to being in Rio in 2016. It was made at the T3 Training Cnetre in Tenerife...a superb facility. Six time CARIFTA medallist, Geoffrey Butler, has arrived back home to prepare for the Island Games. Geoffrey, currently based at Plymouth College in the UK with sister Lara, will prepare for the Island Games in Bermuda under the direction of Coach Andy Copley. He will race the 200m freestyle , 400m, freestyle 1500m freestyle, 200m IM and 400m Im at the Games before heading back to compete in the ASA Natonal Championships. Welcome Home Geoffrey! .
