Our team of Shaune Fraser, Brett Fraser, Geoffrey Butler, Alex McCallum, Lara Butler and Coral Tomascik, together with Head Coach/Team Manager Andy Copley, will head to Bermuda on Friday. The Island Games will provide another great opportunity for our swimmers to put Cayman Swimming on the map. They are all looking in fine shape and ready for FAST SWIMMING. British swimmer, Jazmin Carlin, has certainly had to cope with the highs and lows over the past few years;injury and sickness forcing her to miss the 2012 London Olympic Games. Cayman swimmers closed the SPA Open Meet in St Petersburg with some fine performances. The meet, which has highlighted the resurgence of Cayman Swimming, saw outstanding swims from local swimmers. During the closing session the standouts were: Catriona Macrae (pictured) was back to her best with a silver medal winning performance in the 13/14yrs 100m backstroke of 1:12.83 whilst Alex McCallum, buoyed with confidence, swam to bronze in the Snr 100m backstroke in a lifetime best of 1:03.61...Cole Morgan swam to 6th place in the same event with 1:05.64. Having responded magnificently to the pressure of the "last chance saloon" on Day 1 of the St.Petersburg Meet, Alex Mccallum has gone from strenght to strenght. Racing to a silver medal in the Snr 200m backstroke, he smashed his lifetime best with a 2:14.19; a time which is also inside the standard required for the Loughborough University National Development Squad. Coach Jessica married fiancee Lukasz in a delightful ceremony yesterday. The wedding took place on the beach in front of a small gathering of family and friends; another more formal ceremony to be held in November. A group of swimmers from Camana Bay Aquatic Club (pictured) came out to give the happy couple their best wishes. Everyone at Cayman Swimming wishes Jesscia and Lukasz all the best for the future. Session 4 of the SPA Open in St. Petersburgh saw a Cayman Gold Rush. Alison Jackson opened the proceedings with a Golden swim in the 9/10yrs 100m freestyle (1:12.02) before a hat trick of back to back wins in the breaststroke events: Sarah Jackson taking the 11/12yrs 100m in a new National Record of 1:26.37; Alex Dakers winning the boys 11/12yrs in 1:30.37 and Alison Jackon taking the 9/10yrs in a new CIASA & National Record of 1:34.87. Alison Jackson was once again on the golden trail during the second session of the St.Petersburg Open Meet. She powered her way to gold in the 9/10yrs 50m breaststroke and 9/10yrs 50m freestyle; her times of 42.01 and 32.81 being new CIASA and National Long Course Records. Not to be outdone, sister Sarah raced to gold in the 11/12yrs 50m breaststroke (38.48) before going on to take bronze in the 11/12yrs 50m freestyle in a new National Record time of 30.40. FINA will give out $1.56m of prize money at the forthcoming World Swimming Championships to be held in Barcelona 19th July - 4th August. This amount, purely for the 40 events in the pool (additional money is available for other aquatic disciplines) will be split as follows: 1st $15,000, 2nd $10,000, 3rd $5,000, 4th $4,000, 5th $3,000 6th $2,000......swimmers also often collect bonus payments for World Records. CARIFTA Medalllists and Backstroke specialists, Lauren Hew and Cole Morgan, struck gold on the opening night of the St.Petersburg Aquatics Meet. Swimming in the 50m backstroke they both utilised their superior underwater dolphin kick to take the Women's and Men's titles in 33.50 and 31.06 respectively; Catriona Macrae took bronze in the women's event (34.21) to put two Cayman swimmers on the podium.
